How Stockbeep defines a breakout stock

A breakout can be interpreted mainly in 3 ways:

–  breaking out to a new historical high
–  breaking out of a previous trading range
–  breaking out on a technical analysis model

At Stockbeep, we use the second method, which is also known as the range breakout. If you are looking for stocks making new highs, you can try the New Highs scan here.

The scanner qualifies a breakout stock when today’s price has crossed above the latest 5-day trading range by at least one standard deviation. A standard deviation is a measurement of how much the stock usually moves.

The higher the standard deviation (SD), the greater the magnitude of the breakout.

Here are this week's top 10 breakouts, measured by the move in standard deviations since breaking out.

Market coverage

We track the top 1000 most actively traded counters across NYSE, NASDAQ and AMEX. The 5-day average daily volume is used as the measuring baseline.

If a breakout occurs outside the top 1000 stocks in our dataset, it will not be covered. There are inherent risks with trading low volume stocks, for example “pump and dump" schemes and tape manipulation. Additionally, low-priced low-volume stocks do not attract institutional interest.

How to find breakout stocks during the trading session

If you are on your computer, you can simply navigate to the Breakout Stocks page. The scan operates from 930am to 4pm Eastern time. Results update every 5 seconds.

If you are away from the computer, you may want to follow our respective Twitter/StockTwits handles. We broadcast regular updates on the day's breakout stocks.

A word of caution

Breakouts happen all the time, for all kinds of reasons. A breakout may reverse as quickly as it happened, leading to a failed breakout.

Always consider the background factors behind the breakout, and understand the accompanying context.

Continued buying on increasing volumes may lead to a sustained move, while thin/declining volumes may lead to a reversal. It is also highly important that a catalyst is driving the breakout, for example a jump in earnings or a major announcement.
